Macs Fan Control and TG Pro win different situations. Macs Fan Control has a genuinely free core app and the only Windows Boot Camp build; TG Pro has the widest hardware support claim in the field and the only email alerting. What Macs Fan Control does well
The free download does the whole basic job, on Intel and Apple silicon alike. CrystalIDEA's page describes the two things the app does with a fan: hold a constant speed, or tie a fan's speed to a chosen temperature sensor, the example the vendor gives being a third party hard drive in an older machine. With every fan left on Auto, the same page says the app "works in monitoring-only mode," which makes the free tier an honest sensor readout with no time limit attached. Quitting is covered in the same plain register: "When Macs Fan Control quits, it always restores all fans back to Auto."
The Pro licence adds what the vendor's buy page lists: custom fan presets, priority support, and a way to fund the free tier you may have been using for years. It is a one time purchase sold per computer, and the $24.95 tier adds a Windows build for Intel Macs running Boot Camp, which no other app in this comparison offers at all. Two footnotes belong next to that: Apple documents Boot Camp as a way to install Windows on an Intel based Mac, so the Windows build has no path to Apple silicon, and the vendor's FAQ states the Windows version "offers a 14-day trial and is not a completely free app."
Three smaller facts help set expectations. The app asks for an administrator password the moment you move a fan away from automatic, its FAQ says. It is absent from the Mac App Store because, in the vendor's words, the low level hardware access it needs is not allowed there. And the current build at this writing is 1.5.21, which the download page dates to April 2026, so the project is actively maintained rather than coasting.
What TG Pro does well
Tunabelly claims the widest support surface of the three: "all Mac models running macOS 10.13 or higher, including Intel-based Macs (with or without the T2 security chip) and the complete range of Apple Silicon models," a range its product page extends through the M5 family, on macOS versions from 10.13 High Sierra through macOS 26 Tahoe. If the machine you care about is a decade old Intel MacBook, TG Pro is the only paid app on this page that claims it.
Alerting is the feature neither rival matches. The page advertises local notifications "for a variety of conditions, including high temperatures across multiple sensors, irregular shutdowns, or abnormal diagnostic results," and email alerts carrying "detailed system information for context." A person watching one laptop rarely needs that. A person responsible for a rack of Mac minis in a cupboard probably does, and nothing else in this comparison even gestures at that job.
Fan control comes in the three modes the page names: Auto Boost rules driven by temperature, manual control on models that allow it, and a Max mode. The current release is 2.103, dated March 2026, at $10 one time, advertised as half of a $20 list price, with a 30 day refund window handled through Paddle per the vendor's FAQ.
The wall both vendors have documented
Both apps ask the same firmware for permission, and on recent chips the firmware sometimes says no. Tunabelly's FAQ is direct about it: on M3 series machines "fan control is tightly regulated by the system's hardware. If the hardware disables fan control, TG Pro (or any other third-party app) cannot override these restrictions," and on M4 machines, "when the hardware powers off the fans," TG Pro "is unable to override this behavior." CrystalIDEA's release notes tell the same story from the other side: a limited fan control warning for M3 and M4 Pro and Max MacBooks in version 1.5.17, dated December 2024, then complete fan control brought back on M3 and M4 MacBook Pro in 1.5.18, dated June 2025.
Neither vendor is being evasive here. Moving a fan off automatic means asking the SMC firmware to accept a manual mode, and no app in user space has a second channel when it refuses. The eight app capability table tracks this per vendor and per chip generation if your exact machine is the question.
Per core numbers, and the map nobody publishes
One difference between the three deserves its own heading. TG Pro's page advertises per core CPU temperatures on Apple silicon. CoolCurve shows one aggregate CPU row instead, reporting the maximum across a cluster of sensors Apple does not label by core, because no published documentation maps those diodes to physical cores, and the sensor pipeline post explains why it refuses to guess further. Tunabelly reads the same hardware and draws its line somewhere else. I cannot inspect its pipeline from outside, so take the difference as two engineering judgments rather than a scandal, and weigh which failure you would rather live with: a label that might flatter the data, or an aggregate that admits what it does not know.
Where CoolCurve fits, and where it does not
CoolCurve's case rests on two things. The first is curve depth on Apple silicon: multi point fan curves bound to live sensors, per sensor rules, manual targets, and presets that switch automatically, where Macs Fan Control documents constant or single sensor control and TG Pro documents rules and sliders. The second is what happens when things go wrong, which the full explainer covers mechanism by mechanism: the helper installs through System Settings approval with no password prompt, four independent paths hand fans back to Apple's automatic control, a heartbeat timeout catches a crashed app, and a hard ceiling enforced inside the helper releases every fan to Automatic rather than holding a target past the point where Apple's own thermal management would take over.
The limits are just as concrete. There is no Intel build. A fanless MacBook Air gets an empty fan list and a blunt "No fans detected," with no explanation that the absence is by design. The paid tier holds the curves, rules and presets; the sensor readout and manual fan control stay free after the trial ends, the same ground Macs Fan Control's free tier covers. Do not buy CoolCurve to run an Intel Mac, to control fans under Windows, to email you when a machine in a cupboard runs hot, or to do anything at all on a Mac that has no fans.

Can TG Pro or Macs Fan Control damage my Mac?
Both vendors build in the same safeguard: quitting either app returns every fan to macOS control, by their own documentation. A fan app can only request targets the machine's management firmware accepts, and the platform's own thermal protection sits below any app. The one habit worth avoiding is pinning fans slow under heavy load and forgetting about it.
Do I even need a fan control app on an Apple silicon Mac?
No. Apple documents that fans turn on automatically to cool critical components, and the default management is what most people should keep. A fan app earns its place when you want to see sensor readings, trade noise for a cooler machine during long jobs, or shape when the ramp happens instead of guessing.
